BA, MA and PhD. programmes in Latvia

The department of Asian studies at the University of Latvia presently offers a BA programme in Asian studies (3 years) and an MA in Oriental studies (2 years). Both programmes are going to be accredited for the second time this year in autumn including some significant changes that will be announced and commented on this webpage.

The BA will be redesigned to better prepare students intending to continue their studies at the University of Latvia for specialization in the MA. Thus, the existing modules - japanese studies, sinology, oriental studies - will offer a broader scale of subjects directly related to the relevant language and culture. Both, cultural knowledge and language skills will be taught more intense than in the still running version of the programme.

In order to complete the spectrum of east asian languages and to enhance an understanding of East Asia as a macro-region shaped through cultural bridges over deep divergence the department plans the gradual integration of Taiwanese studies and Korean studies. This endeavour is also reflected in the AsiaRes research library's acquisition policy to continously augment its segments taiwanese and korean resources.

Information on the MA programme will be provided in June 2011.
